Chelsea tipped to make two key signings to solve defensive woes

Chelsea have suffered from a lack of defensive solidity this season

Speaking on Sky Sports News (h/t Express), former West Ham United striker Dean Ashton has claimed that Chelsea will make two key defensive signings this summer to bolster their backline.

The Blues have been left to rue their defensive frailties numerous times this season. In fact, no other team in the top ten has conceded more goals than Frank Lampard’s leaky Blues.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if we were to see a couple of signings in terms of strengthening that defence.”

Chelsea have acted proactively in their efforts to strengthen their attack. Both Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner have made their way to Stamford Bridge in deals that have caught our rivals by surprise.

Kai Havertz too looks set to follow suit as the Blues look to work out a deal with Bayer Leverkusen.

Strengthening upfront hardly disguises the porosity at the back. Of the back five, only captain Cesar Azpilicueta can claim to have shown some about of solidity.

The Spaniard will turn 31 next month and the Blues will sooner or later have to look for a replacement. The more pressing matters right now depend on the other four.

Kepa Arrizabalaga fails to inspire confidence while both of our left-backs look set to leave. Both Antonio Rudiger and Kurt Zouma too have struggled with Andreas Christensen faring no better.

Ashton believes Lampard will not hesitate to ring in the changes if possible. (h/t Express)

“If you don’t feel they’re right and you feel you can go out and get better, I think he will be quite cut throat in that sense.”

Lampard will not have been happy with his side’s performance at Liverpool. Conceding five goals to the team you look to challenge shows we have some way to go before aiming for the title.

The Blues have shown plenty of promise this season. But ignoring our defence will see us wield a formidable sword with no shield to parry off attacks.

Having a balanced team necessitates the need to over-rely on one aspect of the system. Lampard will do well to invest in the defence as well. If not, that result at Anfield should remind him so.
