Chelsea could consider signing Dutch star Memphis Depay in January
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea could consider signing Netherlands star Memphis Depay in the January transfer window.
Depay, who was part of the Dutch squad that bowed out of the World Cup in the quarter-finals stage by losing to Argentina on penalties, has only six months left in his contract at Barcelona (Transfermarkt).
The Blues wanted to sign the former Manchester United forward in the preceding summer window but instead went to get Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona. The option is there to go back for the former next month.
Depay had an impressive World Cup despite not starting every game. He scored only one goal, against the USA in the last-16 stage, but was one of the dangermen in the team alongside the likes of Cody Gakpo.
After the nasty ACL injury picked up by Armando Broja during the friendly against Aston Villa, Chelsea are down by a player in the number nine department.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano tweeted that the Blues are looking to sign a striker in January irrespective of the injury picked by Broja. But, that incident would have accelerated the procedure for sure.
Depay is a number nine who can play in any position across the forward line. He has struggled for game time at Barcelona this season, with only 131 minutes played before the World Cup break. Injuries did not help his cause as well, with a thigh issue ruling him out of action from the last week of September till the start of the World Cup.
Although his previous spell in the Premier League did not go well, when he was at Manchester United, the 28-year-old has shown since then that he is a quality player who can perform on the elite stage. A second innings in the English top flight could do him wonders.

Chelsea could do with the quality, guile and experience of Depay on their side. We would love to see him in our team from next month onwards. It depends on Graham Potter and his staff whether they want him.
