Shaka Hislop signals Chelsea’s major problem of bringing the opposition into the game when they are winning comfortably
Shaka Hislop, the former goalkeeper, has criticised Chelsea’s tendency for their narrow victories; their performance against Leicester City was evidence of this. The Blues led comfortably 2-0 at the break. The tables were turned in second-half as the Foxes managed to rally back.
In Hislop’s words, the West Londoners made things worse for themselves and dragged their opponent into the game. When Axel Disasi scored his own goal from 50 yards before Leicester equalised and turned the game into their head.
It was another example of how the Blues have made the situation worse for themselves but substitutes Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke steered the Blues to a 4-2 win and a place in the FA Cup semi-final.
However, Hislop pointed out that one of the major problems for Chelsea in the game is how they manage to bring the opposition into the game, and speaking to ESPN, he said:
‘’What a silly game because, as easy as the first half, Chelsea had or Chelsea made it creditable to them, but after 45 minutes, Chelsea found a way to drag their opposition back into the game. Let’s be honest, Leicester had nothing to do with the game up until that point, and then all of a sudden it all became really nerve-wracking for Chelsea.’’
The former Newcastle United player aptly summarised our issues during the match, and this is the main cause of our inability to consistently withstand the pressure of the opposition. We were in control of the game heading into halftime, and Leicester weren’t really into the match either. However, one own goal from Disas changed the course of the contest and the score was unexpectedly tied to 2-2.
Nevertheless, this has happened before, not just during the Leicester game. Each match has had this same problem, and we have hardly been able to win any with a significant scoreline
