Chelsea are about to face serious financial problems due to their spending sprees, according to the former Everton chief.
It might be necessary for Chelsea to make deals with some of their greatest rivals to avoid a points deduction according to the former Everton chief. Former Everton manager Keith Wyness feels the Blues are on the verge of a catastrophic financial rule breach, necessitating swift sales.
Players coming through the Chelsea academy represent ‘pure profit’ on Chelsea’s financial sheet; thus, specific stars carry expectations to garner a lot of attention from competitors moving into the 2024–25 season.
Tottenham are among those who will be aiming to capitalize on their opponents’ financial problems. Chelsea face a “more severe” points deduction than Everton and Nottingham Forest as a result of their excessive spending.
Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained:
“I think this time next year we’re going to be sitting here discussing the Chelsea rule breach. I don’t think the Premier League have left themselves anywhere else to go but a serious points deduction.”
“I think Chelsea could have had the biggest breach so far unless there is some very clever engineering done in the transfer market, but I think it will be very hard to do.”
Sales are therefore likely to be high on the list of priorities at Stamford Bridge this summer, especially for those who are home-grown. Since the Todd Boehly-led ownership team took charge at Stamford Bridge in May 2022, the Blues have splashed out more than £1 billion ($1.3bn) in the transfer market.
Premier League teams are only allowed to post losses of up to £105 million ($134 million) across a three-year period, leaving Chelsea at serious risk of incurring the same kind of penalties as Everton and Forest, who have had ten and four points taken off them, respectively, in the 2023–24 campaign.
According to Football Finance Expert Stefan Borson, Chelsea has to find buyers for the likes of Trevoh Chalobah, Conor Gallagher and other academy players. These are the deals that have become a necessity for the club.
