Jurgen Klopp has made his stance clear on Gary Neville and his pointed comments on Chelsea following their 0-1 defeat to Liverpool. The former Manchester United left-back labelled the Blues defeat as ‘billion-pound bottle jobs.’
Which was certainly not a good taste, and the German manager claimed he didn’t understand his comments, he also agreed that Chelsea were a better side in the final. But had luck been on our side, things would have been different now.
With the game heading into extra-time, it looked certain that the match would end in penalty shootouts, but a Virgil van Dijk header in the 118th minute saw a minute of silence from one side of the stadium as Liverpool fans erupted in jubilant mode.
But in a recent press conference, Klopp was asked about Neville’s comments on Chelsea’s defeat to Liverpool, and he said, quoted by Fabrizio Romano:
“They didn’t deserve to get all the blame. They played a really good game. That’s why this ‘bottling’ thing is really not mine. I really don’t understand it. I saw in the faces of the players and Poch after the game that it felt horrible.”.
Even Klopp agrees that we were the better side and don’t deserve this much disrespect. Neville’s comments might have been too much, but there will be more such remarks about us because Chelsea has always strived to win, and now the situation is different under new owners.
Todd Boehly spent a massive amount of money to assemble this squad, and it was never an easy task to form a top squad in such a short time. It is imperative that we stick to the plan than throw the playbook out every time we hit a hurdle.
We need to move on from this defeat because we still have a long season ahead of us, and there’s plenty we can do to make things right. Securing European football is still possible if we manage to win the remainder of our matches. The Carabao Cup defeat will just become another memory in the club’s history, one of those unfortunate moments where victory eluded us.
