Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino claims he was on the verge of tears after losing to Liverpool in Carabao Cup final

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has opened up about the aftermath of the Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool, which almost saw him break down when he was going to receive his runners-up medal.

The Argentine manager was later comforted by the owners, Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly, who came all the way to Wembley to witness the match. The defeat left the Argentine manager in despair, as he had hoped to win his first silverware with a London club.

We need to give more credit to Pochettino, who has done decent work with this disorganised squad and seems to be picking up the pieces and putting them in the right place. Last season, we were much worse and struggled to even score goals.

We still laboured in front of goal, but we’ve come a long way since the previous campaign, so Pochettino solely shouldn’t take the blame for the Carabao Cup loss because our players wasted five great chances. After the defeat, the Argentine manager opened up about it and said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano:

“When I went up the steps at Wembley, I was so upset. Nearly crying. When I arrived there, it was so difficult to stop myself. But I immediately felt support from the owners; they have been very nice. I appreciated that.”.

Pochettino deserved the trophy.

We were simply unlucky and ineffective in front of goal, despite having opportunities to win the trophy. We let Pochettino down; he has done his part within his authority, and it was up to the players to execute on the pitch. Therefore, it would be unfair to solely target the Argentine manager, who shouldn’t have to take the fall.
