Gary Lineker questions Chelsea players’ connection with the fans

Gary Lineker doubts if Chelsea fans have any connection with Mauricio Pochettino and Todd Boehly following the Blues 1-0 loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

After the final whistle, as Liverpool celebrated their victory over Chelsea, the entire stadium resonated with jubilant chants from Liverpool fans as Klopp and the team acknowledged their support.

As Chelsea went to collect their runners-up medals, it appeared as if there were no Chelsea supporters left in the stands. Building a strong relationship with supporters hinges on winning games; failure to do so can lead to discontent among fans.

Chelsea fans are not used to seeing things like their club going through a re-development phase. Under Roman Abramovich, it was never a thing, and this has led to the Blues board and management losing connection with them, as per Lineker, who further tells The Rest is Football on Youtube:

‘’Chelsea fans, during the presentation, you could see there was a difference between Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool fans who felt like family, and by huge contrast, you could see between Chelsea fans and Liverpool fans when Todd Boehly was there and Mauricio Pochettino was there; it was like there was no connection whatsoever.’’

Chelsea’s primary objective has consistently been winning, irrespective of the players or managers in charge. If a manager fails to deliver positive results promptly, dismissal is inevitable. This has been the norm under Abramovich’s ownership, with numerous managers experiencing short tenures before being replaced, while the club continued to achieve success.

However, there has been a shift in approach. Boehly aims to instill new principles among supporters, emphasizing the importance of backing the manager and building a youthful, forward-thinking team for the future. Some fans, accustomed to a different approach, may lack the patience to endure the transition period required for the team’s evolution.
