Chelsea star flying high as he wins EFL Cup gong ahead of Liverpool showdown

Chelsea take to Twitter to congratulate Cole Palmer for winning the Carabao Cup Player of the Round from the semi-final

Cole Palmer scored twice in Chelsea FC’s high-scoring 6-1 win against Middlesbrough. Mauricio Pochettino’s men turned the game around after losing 1-0 in the first leg.

Michael Carrick & Co. were tipped to shock the Blues, however, the West Londoners gave their everything in the return fixture. Boro midfielder Jonathan Howson opened the scoreline, unfortunately for Chelsea, with an own goal.

The Stamford Bridge residents capitalised on this and added five more to the tally. Enzo Fernandez (29′), Disasi (36′), Palmer (42′, 77′) and Madueke (81′) ended up on the scoresheet. Conor Gallagher and Raheem Sterling did their bit by assisting the scorers.

The brace was enough for Cole Palmer to secure the Player of the Round accolade. The former Manchester City man is the second Chelsea player to bag the award after Mykhailo Mudryk (quarterfinals).

A whole different ball game awaits

Overturning the 1-0 deficit to a 6-2 aggregate win might be one of the highlights of the season for Chelsea. However, what awaits them is no Middlesbrough or a regular team.

Apart from the fact that Liverpool is the most in-form English team presently, they also have a deep-rooted cause to try and win the trophy. Liverpool’s head coach Jurgen Klopp announced his voluntary exit from the club as the curtains fall for the ongoing season.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool thrashed Pochettino’s Chelsea 4-1 the last time they met.

Klopp is known for his likeable nature among the players and support staff. They might not take any chance to give their manager a memorable farewell lightly. The Merseysiders are already leading the Premier League table and now they will be playing the EFL final in a few days.

Considering the current form of both teams, it is safe to say that Liverpool have one hand on the trophy already. It will take more than a miracle for Chelsea to topple their strong rivals. The showdown should be quite intense.
