Karim Benzema set to continue at Al-Ittihad amid Chelsea interest

Chelsea might have to explore other options following a recent update on Karim Benzema’s future. Despite speculation about his departure from the Saudi Pro League, the striker will remain at Al-Ittihad.

According to Athletic, (subscription required), (h/t Metro), Benzema wasn’t thrilled about staying in the Middle East, and fans weren’t satisfied with his previous performance at Real Madrid. Nevertheless, the forward has decided to continue with Al-Ittihad.

Benzema made the move to the Middle East last summer from Real Madrid and had expressed dissatisfaction, leading to rumors connecting him with other clubs. Despite his reasonable performance, contributing 15 goals in 24 appearances across all competitions, the 36-year-old’s attitude has reportedly caused discontent among the club and fans.

Benzema’s recent actions, such as missing the club’s mid-season break and returning late after the team’s arrival, resulted in the forward being excluded from training with the first team at Al-Ittihad.

Chelsea had been closely monitoring Benzema’s situation and had intentions to sign him on loan until the end of the season. However, despite these instances, the 36-year-old Frenchman has decided to remain at Al-Ittihad. As a result, both Chelsea and Manchester United will need to explore alternative options.

Even if they had succeeded in bringing him to London, matching Benzema’s substantial wages would have been challenging and could have disrupted their wage bill. Chelsea, mindful of their financial constraints, has been relatively quiet in the transfer window so far.

Chelsea target Karim Benzema will remain at Al-Ittihad.

Benzema is among the highest earners in the Saudi Pro League, and acquiring his signature would have required significant adjustments to Chelsea’s wage bill. Given the club’s substantial spending in recent transfer windows, they find themselves in a position where they need to generate revenue before making additional signings. This financial constraint has compelled Chelsea to exercise caution and prioritize financial stability in their transfer dealings.

Despite the apparent wealth in Saudi football, Benzema’s dissatisfaction with his choice to join Al-Ittihad suggests that there are still compelling reasons for strikers of his caliber to remain in Europe. As the transfer window approaches its final day, Chelsea faces the prospect of not securing any new additions. The likelihood of recruiting a short-term striker for the club seems increasingly uncertain at this stage.
