Veteran ace says ‘sorry’ after blasting Chelsea teammates in Luton Town win

Chelsea star Thiago Silva ‘apologises’ after scraping through against Luton Town

Chelsea superstar Thiago Silva is no stranger to the ups and downs in club football, the latter of which has become synonymous with the Blues of late. Mauricio Pochettino’s side almost threw away a three-goal lead against Luton Town last night in a clash that was not for the faint of heart.

Goals from Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke put the Blues in a comfortable spot heading into the final 20 minutes of the clash at Kenilworth Road. However, lapses in concentration saw Ross Barkley and Elijah Adebayo bring Luton to within a whisker of sharing the spoils.

Adebayo’s 87th-minute strike ensured that the Blues set up a nervy finale with little margin for error. Kenilworth Road is not an easy place to visit and Chelsea sure made life difficult for themselves, after having the match in the sack.

One man who was visibly upset with his Chelsea teammates was Silva. According to The Sun, he made his displeasure show in public at full-time and left no doubt in the minds of Chelsea stars that their performance on the night was not good enough.

As quoted by Fabrizio Romano via X, Silva has now shed some context into his thoughts on the matter. An elite central defender and one of the finest players of his generation, it comes as no surprise that the Brazilian holds himself to high standards. Understandably, he will find it annoying when others around him do not meet that hunger or consistency.

The 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Christmas Eve certainly put a dampener on celebrations. It particularly seems to have affected Silva as he was in no mood to go into the New Year without a victory under his belt.

“I just didn’t want to spend New Year’s like I did Christmas, sorry”

Silva is well aware of the competitive nature of the Premier League and knows that Chelsea are far from the finished point at this stage of their rebuild. What matters the most is that we put up the points on the board. Our lethargy did not come back to bite us and Mauricio Pochettino will certainly have breathed a sigh of relief at full-time.

The win keeps Chelsea in the tenth spot, within touching distance of a top-six finish. There is still much to play for and as long as we keep grinding out the results, the team should evolve and develop into an elite core of players whose mantra will be to win at all costs.

Silva is right in his assessment that the Blues will get no free lunches in the Premier League. Thankfully we have capped off what has been a poor 2023 with a win. Chelsea kick-off 2024 with the FA Cup clash against Preston North End. Having already earned themselves a spot in the Carabao Cup last four, Pochettino and Co will be hoping for another Cup run.
