Levi Colwill is now in danger of facing a one-match suspension for the Chelsea game after his comments on VAR following the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United.
United were ahead in just 17 minutes when Scott McTominay rolled the ball into the net. Chelsea levelled the scoring when Cole Palmer prodded the ball in the 45th minute.
United’s second goal was by Scott McTominay, where the Scottish came from behind and beat Colwill in the final battle to give United the win. But the England international said it was a push from the back and should have been a foul.
Colwill’s call on foul did get a lengthy VAR check, but the goal stood as there was no foul on the 20-year-old, which disappointed the centre-back, and he took his frustration into the post-match press conference.
In their previous game against Brighton & Hove Albion, Colwill handed the ball inside the Chelsea box, but VAR stepped in, and the penalty was ruled out. However, the Var wasn’t with him this time, and the defender didn’t hold back, (h/t Football. London) saying, quoted by Daily Mail:
“VAR has something against me right now; I don’t know what I’ve done to them. Against Brighton, they tried to give a pen, and then when I got pulled [by McTominay], they didn’t give anything.”
The players and the team as a whole are undoubtedly frustrated by the questionable decisions that VAR has made that have altered the game. Making the correct choice is an extremely unusual occurrence. Colwill believed that McTominay had fouled, and since the call was made, he was obliged to become furious and remark about the officials.
If he says anything on VAR, he will undoubtedly be suspended. Hopefully, this isn’t the case, since our players have been suspended multiple times for red cards, so we need to be really watchful of our words and behaviour during games. It will be better to move on and focus on our next game.
