Roy Keane feels Chelsea midfielder isn’t good enough to play for England

Former Manchester United player Roy Keane says Conor Gallagher isn’t good enough to play for England in Euro 2024. The Chelsea midfielder has been Gareth Southgate’s first pick in midfield.

The 23-year-old was handed his first senior appearance for the national team two years ago, and since then, the Chelsea midfielder has remained in the England squad for international matches. Manager Gareth Southgate even revealed that the player had ‘outstanding mentality’.

Now Euro 2024 is on the horizon. Gallagher will be hoping to receive a call-up but will certainly face competition from other players and Chelsea’s teammates, Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer.

The 23-year-old has redeemed himself under Mauricio Pochettino, and if he continues with his fine performance, he will certainly have a big chance of getting a call-up for Euro 2024.

But Keane feels Gallagher isn’t good enough and shouldn’t be picked up by Southgate for next year’s Euro after Gary Neville said he has a good chance of playing in the Euro, (h/t Football.London) speaking to Stick To Football, he said:

“The other one (option) is Conor Gallagher, who’s obviously played, but he’s a runner.” But Keane shut it down and said, “No, I don’t think he’s good enough.”

Though it’s only their view, Gallagher has demonstrated on the pitch why the Three Lions manager should select him for England matches despite having Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham. Gallagher will undoubtedly deserve the call-up if he puts up his strong performance through the rest of the season. Experts are free to say whatever they want; the manager will make the final decision.

The England international has blossomed into a magnificent player and is enjoying his comeback journey with four goals and four assists in 13 games. We might have agreed with Keane last season, but given how much Gallagher has matured, it’s difficult to agree with any pundit who believes that Gallagher isn’t sufficiently talented.
