Mauricio Pochettino updates on Reece James’ surgery decision and confirms the right-back is considering undergoing hamstring surgery.
The 24-year-old has sought specialist advice for surgery on his hamstring injury, which he suffered in a 2-0 defeat to Everton. James has often been dealt with the same injury since last season and now could be forced to undergo surgery to avoid the same injury again.
The right-back has missed 50% of Chelsea matches in 18 months and has yet to complete a full match since April. He suffered a hamstring injury in the first game of this campaign, and before making a comeback, the club cautioned him about his recovery.
However, it seems that things haven’t gone smoothly. The right-back appears to have a persistent hamstring issue, and surgery is the only option to overcome it.
The Argentine manager has been told to keep things low-key regarding the James injury crisis. When asked if the right-back would undergo surgery, (h/t Evening Standard), he said:
“First, we need to decide how we will proceed with his recovery. On Monday, we need to see how it is going to be, see the situation, and then proceed in trying to find a different way to approach the problem and find different alternatives.”
Since James has continued to injure his hamstring during games despite our letting it heal naturally, there isn’t much else to decide. This suggests that he may require surgery to fully repair the injury.
If we take the same path again, the right-back will sustain the same injury, so surgery is necessary. It should have been done sooner, but for now, we should move forward with a sensible plan and surgery is the better decision.
After the surgery, he will undoubtedly miss four to five months, but that’s alright since at least he will be free of it and able to return to his earlier state of fitness. He will lose the second season on a bounce since injuries haven’t been fair to a player with his calibre.
