David Ornstein confirmed Chelsea don’t have Ivan Toney as their ideal centre-forward, and he isn’t on the Blues shortlist of January targets. The Brentford forward has been heavily linked with an exit from the club in January, with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur also interested. It remains to be seen which club will secure the services of the 27-year-old.
But now it appears Chelsea have stepped back from being one of the sides that want to sign the England international. His age remains the key issue for the Blues, for him whom Toney does not fall under the profile of signing.
Toney has made it clear that he wants to leave, and Brentford are holding out for £100 million for their star centre-forward. Toney is currently serving an eight-month ban due to betting and will be back in January.
He is now on his 18th month of his contract and is unlikely to extend it. Toney, who finished the season as the third Premier League top scorer with 20 goals, will be an impressive addition.
But now it’s a two club race after Chelsea seems to have pulled out, according to famous journalist David Ornstein, (h/t Football.London), who told NBC
“Currently, it’s looking less likely that he will move in January. Maybe more likely in the summer. I’ve been advised not to rule out free agency the summer after next.”
It’s a very poor decision to not sign a forward just because he is in his late 20s. Our squad needs a few experienced players to lead the club. The reassembling phase will undoubtedly move more slowly if there are too many inexperienced young players. We must change the way we approach transfers and prioritise adding experienced players.
Since he won’t be available in January, a summer transfer is conceivable, but Chelsea are also considering Victor Osimhen, and they’ll probably prefer the Nigerian forward over Toney.
