Chelsea step up talks to extend Conor Gallagher contract

Chelsea found a breakthrough in talks with Conor Gallagher over the extension of his contract. The midfielder had much interest from other clubs last summer but wanted to remain at the club.

According to 90min, (h/t Express), the midfielder is open to renewing his deal beyond 2025. The Chelsea board is looking to tie down Gallagher to a fresh long-term deal before the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old was among the players put on sale last summer but was adamant about leaving, and since then he has become an imperative figure for Mauricio Pochettino.

Mauricio Pochettino advised Chelsea to keep Gallagher.

Tottenham, West Ham, and Newcastle United were keeping an eye on Gallagher’s situation last summer, and Pochettino advised the club to keep him. Gallagher has now started in all games under the Argentine manager.

The midfielder is now enjoying his time under Pochettino and has thanked the manager for allowing him to prove his worth. Pochettino earlier hinted that he would extend his contract with Chelsea.

Gallagher has started every game under the former Southampton manager, which is praiseworthy given his immense progression under Pochettino. The fact that he has three assists this season further shows how much he has grown as a player.

Being a highly diligent player, Gallagher’s refusal to quit the team in the summer proved to be worthwhile considering that he is now a consistent starter. He has been substantial for us and has won more possession in the attacking third than any other player in Europe this season. He stood out against Spurs, creating more chances than he has ever created in a single Premier League game.

These stats are a testament to his improvement under Mauricio Pochettino, and the midfielder is bound to get better. Extending his contract remains a key target because Pochettino wants the midfielder to remain at the club, which indicates how much the Argentine values him.
