Gareth Southgate cannot hide his admiration for Chelsea star Levi Colwill

Speaking in a press conference as quoted by Football. London, England manager Gareth Southgate could not hide his admiration for Chelsea star Levi Colwill after naming him in the Three Lions squad for the upcoming games.

Southgate hinted at taking a page out of the book of Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino and playing Colwill as a left-back for the national team. The talented defender, albeit a centre-back plays admirable on the left side of defence as well.

This season, Pochettino has used Colwill as a left-back in almost every game and even pushed Ben Chilwell higher up the pitch. That said, the young Englishman definitely feels more comfortable playing in central defence.

Levi Colwill made a name for himself last season out on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion. He was one of Roberto de Zerbi’s most important players last season and has started life at Chelsea just like most of us envisioned him to.

Despite being called up by Southgate last time as well, Colwill is yet to earn his Three Lions debut. There is no doubt that this time he would definitely get a game, especially with the likes of Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell both injured and missing out.

Speaking in the press conference, Southgate revealed being a huge fan of Colwill and explained how he could use him going forward for the national team

“Yeah, very much so. We’re conscious most of his football has been as a centre-back and I think it’s his preference and strongest position but equally we’re without a lot of experience at left back and he’s playing there regularly. We’ve got some other centre-backs who can fill in at full-back areas as well.  Levi, we really like. He had a fantastic season last year with Brighton”

There is a reason why Pochettino has chosen to start Colwill in every Premier League game this season and it has to do with the immense potential that he possesses. Without doubt, he is a star in the making and the Blues are lucky to have him.

It is unlikely that Colwill plays much of his football at left-back. He is a natural centre-back who can be an absolute unit in the defence and that is where his long-term future seems to be lying.

At Colwill’s age, considering the potential he has, the sky is the limit for him. Let’s hope he can be the leader in our backline for years to come.
