Transfer News: Chelsea have been scouring Athletic Club star for a ‘long time’

Chelsea have been scouting Spanish winger Nico Williams for a long time

Few players have the ability to dazzle and absolutely mesmerize you with sheer pace and trickery and Nico Williams who Chelsea seem to have wanted to sign is one of them. The younger of the famous William brothers, Nico has been spectacular for Athletic Bilbao in La Liga.

His brother, Inaki Williams also plays for the same Spanish side. He is a number nine with terrific pace as well but has now transitioned into a right-wing role. Nico on the other hand is a pure winger who can play on the left or right of attack.

Considering that Athletic have a very specific policy of signing players only from the Basque regions of Spain and France, they have unearthed two gems in Inaki and Nico. The latter though is the subject of interest when it comes to Chelsea.

Apparently, according to Fabrizio Romano (h/t Football. London), Chelsea were interested in Nico Williams in the summer as he was one of the wingers they considered along with Cole Palmer and Michael Olise. Eventually, they went with the former Manchester City man.

Now, what really piques our interest still when it comes to Nico is the fact that his contract expires next summer. (Transfermarkt). While Bilbao generally don’t let their players leave, the fact that he has not yet signed a new contract is interesting.

If the 21-year-old does become a free agent next summer, he will be a very hot prospect in the transfer market. Him being Spanish means it will be a huge surprise if one of the La Liga giants like Barcelona, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid do not make a move for him.

Chelsea are relatively well stocked in the wing department and might not need to go shopping in the summer. However, would they be willing to let such an enticing opportunity of signing Nico on a free go?

Ultimately, it will be a huge surprise if eventually he doesn’t sign a new contract with his club. However, we must keep an eye out on this situation.
