“They miss a Drogba-like player”- Pundit urges Chelsea to sign an upgrade on Nicolas Jackson after Arsenal draw

Shaun Wright-Phillips says Chelsea should sign no-nonsense striker

Shaun Wright-Phillips has urged Chelsea to sign an upgrade on Nicolas Jackson after their 2-2 draw against Arsenal last weekend.

The former Chelsea player feels the club needs a ‘no-nonsense striker’ similar to Didier Drogba if they want to challenge the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blues’ inability to locate a proven striker has been a primary problem, which has seen them struggle in front of the goal. Last summer, they acquired Nicolas Jackson who is adjusting himself to the league.

Jackson has three goals for Chelsea, but he still needs to be more clinical in front of the goal. He could have had his fourth goal against Arsenal had he not taken time to put the ball in the net.

Wright-Philips says the Blues need a ruthless striker who makes every chance count and (h/t Football.London) speaking to Express via football betting site Betway, he recommended Chelsea a sort of striker they should sign:

“I think if Nicolas Jackson scores that chance (late opportunity vs. Arsenal), the game is over, but he tries to go around the goalkeeper, and that’s another thing with confidence; they might need a striker—a no-nonsense striker.”

“You can say [Erling] Haaland, [Julian] Alvarez, [Darwin] Nunez, or Son [Heung-min], players who don’t care how the ball goes in the goal. It doesn’t need to look nice; it just needs to hit the back of the net. They miss a Drogba-like player, just to put the ball in the goal.”

The former Chelsea forward is on point with his opinion. Had there been any other striker in Jackson’s place, he would have tried shooting instead of rounding off the keeper. Chelsea are lacking a striker who can maximise on any opportunity and punish the goalkeeper for their small mistakes. We haven’t had a ruthless striker since the departure of Drogba.

We shouldn’t be overly critical of Jackson because he is young, and he will certainly learn from those mistakes and will only get better with his finishing. If the Blues do go for a striker, hopefully, they sign an experienced centre-forward instead of a young one.
