“It’s a dream come true”- Moises Caicedo explains why he chose Chelsea despite Liverpool agreement

Moises Caicedo has completed his move to Chelsea for a British transfer record fee

Moises Caicedo revealed he did not think twice before signing for Chelsea as the Blues and Liverpool battled for the 21-year-old’s acquisition, which saw the West Londoners pay a British transfer record.

The Ecuadorian midfielder completed his £115m move to West London after Chelsea were locked in negotiations with Brighton & Hove Albion for months.

This is the second time Chelsea have gone overboard for a player’s acquisition, as they paid £106.8 million for Enzo Fernandez to SL Benfica in the January transfer window.

Liverpool also had their bid worth £111m agreed by the Seagulls, and it appeared the midfielder would join the Reds. But Caicedo had second thoughts regarding joining Liverpool, which saw Chelsea outbid them to sign the 21-year-old.

The midfielder also has no regrets about joining Chelsea. During his interview after his unveiling, (h/t Guardian), the former Brighton midfielder said:

“I am so excited to be here at this big club, and I didn’t have to think twice when Chelsea called me; I just knew I wanted to sign for the club. It’s a dream come true to be here, and I can’t wait to get started with the team.”

When a player makes statements like this, it shows that he genuinely wants to play for that team and that he is ready to risk everything on the pitch to become an indispensable member of us.

His acquisition will make a major difference in our enduring defensive midfield issue from last season. He can be seen as a successor to N’Golo Kante, and Enzo Fernandez will now have greater flexibility and will operate at his full capacity in an attacking role.

With the signing of Caicedo complete, we are now close to acquiring Romeo Lavia. This seems like business we should have concluded weeks ago given the exits in this area but it’s better late than never. It was also important to first sell the players before heavily investing in their replacements.
