Fabrizio Romano confirms £15 million Chelsea bid for MLS goalkeeper

Fabrizio Romano confirms Chelsea bid for New England’s Serbian goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic

According to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Chelsea have now made a £15 million bid for Major League Soccer star Djordje Petrovic as they look to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga this summer transfer window.

Petrovic could slot into Kepa’s position after the Spaniard joined Real Madrid on a season-long loan. The Blues currently have Robert Sanchez as their No. 1 goalkeeper for this season but will need an able deputy should the need arise.

Petrovic has been making waves in MLS since joining New England two years ago from FK Cukaricki and has been seen as one of the best goalkeepers in the league. While it would be too much to ask of him to don the starting goalkeeper’s jersey, he could prove to be an able backup.

The 23-year-old replaced Matt Turner and has since become a household name for the club, making 48 appearances for New England. The Serbian shot-stopper finished as the second-best goalkeeper after merely making 21 appearances last season.

The custodian was also inducted into the 2023 MLS All-Star Game and has the highest percentage of saves with 99 saves and a 78.6 save percentage. The Blues need a top-notch goalkeeper, and Petrovic’s qualities have captivated them enough to make a bid. It remains to be seen how the MLS club respond.

Other clubs, such as FC Nantes and Nottingham Forest, both had their bids turned down by the MLS club and now Chelsea will hope their offer is enough to convince them to sell Petrovic.

There is a significant difference between playing in the Premier League and MLS, it will take Petrovic some time to acclimatise to the expectations of donning a Blue jersey. His track record thankfully suggests that he likes a challenge and is likely to rise to the occasion.
