Chelsea’s interest in £20m USMNT star not dependant on Moises Caicedo transfer

Chelsea are ramping up their pursuit of Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams with £20m release clause

According to Phil Hay and Simon Johnson for The Athletic (subscription required), Chelsea are stepping up their pursuit to sign Leeds United and USA midfielder Tyler Adams before the deadline of this summer window.

The midfielder has a release clause of £20m in his contract with the Yorkshire-based club. As per Daily Mail, Chelsea are planning to sign the player without giving up on the signature of Moises Caicedo.

The latter has been the Blues’ top target this summer. Brighton have rejected three bids for the Ecuador international so far. The 21-year-old has missed his latest training with the Seagulls to potentially force a move to Stamford Bridge.

Coming back to Adams, he has been a subject of interest for fellow Premier League side Aston Villa. It remains to be seen whether Unai Emery’s team will make a move for him.

Looking at the latest report, it seems as if Chelsea will make a move for the 24-year-old in the coming days. The payable release clause is such an attraction.

Adams is a central midfielder who has played as a solo defensive midfielder and a right-back so far in his career. He started his career at New York Red Bulls before moving to RB Leipzig in 2019. The move to Leeds took place last summer.

Even though the Elland Road club got relegated by the end of last season, the American international was one of their better players. His performance against Chelsea in a 3-0 win early last season highlighted how good he is as a player. The impressive World Cup enhanced the reputation.

Regardless of what happens with Caicedo’s signing, Chelsea should continue their pursuit of Adams. They are short in the central midfield department and could do with two additions before the transfer window deadline.
