Pundit says ’embarrassing’ Liverpool were bested by Chelsea in Moises Caicedo saga

Alan Shearer calls out Liverpool after failing to sign Moises Caicedo with Chelsea on the verge of acquiring him

Alan Shearer has criticised Liverpool for missing out on Moises Caicedo’s signing, as Chelsea are on the verge of acquiring him. The last two days have been chaotic in the transfer market as Chelsea and Liverpool fought for the services of an Ecuadorian midfielder.

Liverpool had their British transfer record of £111 million agreed by Brighton & Hove Albion. It overtook the best offer made by Chelsea, who have been in negotiations for months with Brighton.

However, this was the first of many twists in the transfer window. Even Jurgen Klopp confirmed Liverpool had reached an agreement with Brighton to sign Caciedo.

But the Blues remained in the race and were prepared to outbid the Reds. The West Londoners are understood to be going to submit a British club record £115 million bid, £4 million more than Liverpool’s proposal.

This has given Chelsea a clear chit to sign Caicedo, who has already agreed on personal terms to join the club, and seeing the Blues trumping Liverpool in biding Shearer was feeling embarrassed for the Reds, (h/t Mirror) he told The Rest Is Football podcast:

“It’s pretty embarrassing for Liverpool, if that is the case. They’ve agreed a deal for £111 million, and then, all of a sudden, the player has said, ‘No thanks; I don’t fancy coming to you; I’m going to London instead’.

In what has been an unforgettable transfer war between Chelsea and Liverpool, we finally seem prepared to sign Caicedo. Since we had been in negotiations with the club for months to sign our top target, seeing him join another team would have felt like a punch to the gut.

It is a good thing we laid the foundation for the move and in a way, Liverpool’s bid helped us get the move over the line sooner than we would have without their intrusion. It did however cost us a few extra million Pounds for the 21-year-old Ecuador international.

The personal agreement played a crucial role because Caicedo had second thoughts about joining the Reds, leading us to make a British transfer record offer for him. Hopefully, we’ll sign him before Liverpool’s game and make the much-awaited announcement before the game. It is good to see Chelsea retain their pull despite a horrible season.
