Mason Mount joins Manchester United after 18 years at Chelsea
Chelsea academy graduate Mason Mount has officially completed his move to rival club Manchester United in a deal worth £55 million ($69.5 million) with another £5 million ($6.3 million) in potential add-ons.
As per ESPN, the bonuses are due to Chelsea being “strongly dependent” on Mount’s appearances and success in a Manchester United jersey. Given that we are rivals, it is fair to say the Blues will be fine even if they don’t see a penny of the add-ons.
The midfielder, who had one year left on his contract at Chelsea, was linked with a move to Manchester United after contract renewal talks broke down. In all fairness, we are better off without a player whose heart isn’t keen on staying at Stamford Bridge.
The England international leaves Chelsea after 18 years of service to the club, where he came through the youth system to make a name for himself on the senior side. Mount provided the assist for Kai Havertz’s match-winner in the 2021 UEFA Champions League final against Manchester City.
Chelsea fans will have a hard time moving on from this as one of their best midfielders has joined a rival club, which you occasionally see in football. It will be tough to see him in a different jersey when he arrives at Stamford Bridge next season and it is fair to say that there will be no love lost.
The 24-year-old made a total of 195 appearances and registered 33 goals and 37 assists in Chelsea’s shirt across all competitions. He endured a poor season last term due to injury and an abdominal issue. While it is always good to see one of our own succeed elsewhere, we have very mixed feelings about it if it happens with a direct rival.
Mount became one of the club’s key players at a young age and contributed significantly to each season. Although it will be unusual to see him wearing a new shirt, players sometimes switch teams for their own good. We hardly ever see players who remain at the club even when things are uncertain at the team.

He had the option to remain and assist Mauricio Pochettino in reviving the team. Although it was his decision in the end, the positive point is that we sold him this season instead of losing him for free in 2024. It’s time to move on, and hopefully, we will find his replacement before the start of the new season, as we will kick off our new era under Pochettino.
