Luis Enrique wants 28-year-old Chelsea star at PSG

Luis Enrique is interested in bringing Chelsea shot-stopper Kepa Arrizablaga to Paris Saint-Germain

Luis Enrique wants a new shot-stopper to compete with Gianluigi Donnarumma between the sticks and sees Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizablaga as an ideal option for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

According to L’Equipe, (h/t Metro), Paris Saint-Germain have been exploring their goalkeeper options and have added the Spanish goalkeeper to their list.

Enrique already worked with Kepa when he was manager of the Spain national team, where he led them to the UEFA Nations League final in 2022 before calling it quits following their 2022 FIFA World Cup exit at the hands of Morocco.

The Spanish goalkeeper was signed by the Blues in 2018, breaking the transfer record for the most expensive goalkeeper at £71.6 million, but he has struggled to live up to that value.

What should Chelsea do?

Edouard Mendy’s arrival at Chelsea further hampered his ability to maintain his place as the starting custodian, as the shot-stopper played second fiddle in the last two seasons. However, Kepa regained his starting position last season after Mendy had an injury and had a decent time between the sticks.

The 28-year-old could still have a future at Stamford Bridge. Newly-appointed Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino has decided to stick with the former Athletic Bilbao keeper.

As there will be a Spanish connection between them, Enrique, who has worked with Kepa, might be able to guide the 28-year-old in regaining his self-assurance in front of the goal. Playing from the back is essential to the former Barcelona manager’s system, and Kepa has decent distribution skills.

However, he may want to operate as a backup goalkeeper once again, as he is in the prime years of his career. We also know PSG can go to any limit to buy a player, but we don’t have a backup for him right now. Selling him would prove complicated unless we look for a new goalkeeper in the market.

Pochettino wants to keep the 28-year-old with the team, so unless PSG makes a sizable bid, we should continue with the Spaniard, especially after Mendy’s sale earlier this summer. There has been a constant feeling among the fanbase that awe can upgrade on Kepa for the past few seasons but he hasn’t been overly bad in the chances he has been handed. Let’s give him a chance.
