Liverpool prepare opening bid for Chelsea midfield target

Chelsea and Liverpool are interested in signing Romeo Lavia from Southampton

Liverpool are seemingly going to make an opening bid for Southampton youngster Romeo Lavia amid interest from Premier League clubs including Chelsea.

As per Talksport, (h/t Daily Mail) Liverpool are hoping to land the midfielder by making their first proposal to Southampton, who were relegated to the Championship last season.

The 19-year-old, who enjoyed a breakthrough season with Saints, has been valued by the club at around £50 million, with Liverpool hoping to steal a march on their rivals. The Blues have made it a habit to sign up-and-coming youngsters under Todd Boehly’s ownership.

But it seems this is a race they are currently training. Chelsea are interested in signing the youngster and have been urged by co-director of recruitment and talent Joe Shields to sign the midfielder.

But it is understood that the Blues have other priorities and are looking to sign other targets to reinforce their midfield before the start of the next campaign. Besides Chelsea, Arsenal have also shown interest in signing the 19-year-old, but their primary objective has been Declan Rice, as they are nearing his acquisition.

Liverpool are looking to modify their midfield and have already bought the likes of Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai. But their No. 6 position still needs to be strengthened given Fabinho’s inconsistent performance, which is why their interest in Lavia makes sense and could be serious.

The West Londoners also want to strengthen their midfield and have considered Moises Caicedo’s acquisition a top priority. However, they have scaled back their interest in Lavia as a result of the most recent news.

Lavia will be a terrific addition because he is young and is accustomed to the Premier League’s demands. He played for the Saints last season in 29 games, but he was unable to prevent Southampton from being relegated. That will obviously work in the favour of his suitors wanting to buy him this summer.

So long as Chelsea don’t rekindle their interest in signing the former Manchester City academy star, Liverpool could have a clear path to sign the midfielder. The Blues, on the other hand, are currently going to intensify their negotiations to conclude Caicedo’s signing. If we can’t sign the Ecuador international somehow, then we could live to regret potentially missing out on the Belgian midfielder.
