“It is difficult”- Pochettino hopeful that injury-ridden Chelsea star doesn’t miss the 2023-24 season

Chelsea star Wesley Fofana could miss the entire 2023–24 season after ACL problem

Mauricio Pochettino is hoping that Chelsea star Wesley Fofana doesn’t miss the entire 2023-24 season after rupturing his ACL in training ahead of the pre-season trip to USA.

The $70 million signing underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and the club confirmed he had the operation on Tuesday, but his availability is still uncertain. It is a fresh blow for a player who has struggled to stay fit for two years now.

The Frenchman already endured an injury-plagued season last term after picking up a knee problem and could miss the entirety of another campaign due to injury. It more or less is a major blow both for club and player.

Now this could force the club to look for his backup in the market despite having Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill, and Benoit Badiashile, while Trevoh Chalobah’s future remains in doubt. The last thing Chelsea need is their star man ruled out indefinitely.

Badiashile’s return, however, is also unknown because the club has not officially confirmed it and since he was left off the preseason tour for rehabilitation at Cobham. Pochettino also stressed that he hopes to see Fofana return before the end of the season in a press conference, (h/t Daily Mail), as he claimed:

‘I hope yes, he can be ready to play. We know very well that it is difficult. Different bodies, different physiological people He is evolving in a different way. We hope everything is going well with his recovery and he can be ready before the end of the season.’

Fofana’s first season in Blue was already marred by injuries, and he now faces the possibility of missing a major chunk of the second one as well. The 23-year-old has been unlucky with injuries since his final season at Leicester City. We have also been unlucky because our 2022–23 season began with several players out injured, forcing us to make unwise decisions that we never quite recovered from.

Hopefully, we find his backup before the start of the new campaign and the same thing doesn’t repeat, as our opening game will be against a tough opponent, Liverpool, on August 13.We wish Fofana the best and hope he returns to action soon, and leave his injury troubles behind him.
