Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling confirms he has changed die to shed ‘extra weight’

Chelsea superstar Raheem Sterling has confirmed that he has made changes to his diet to shed a bit of extra weight he thought he was carrying.

The England international signed for the Blues in a surprise move from Manchester City last summer for a fee of £50million. He was a superstar at Man City, winning multiple Premier League titles.

For that money and for that reputation, Chelsea fans expected Sterling to have a blockbuster season. But much like his teammates, he was underwhelming.

The 28-year-old managed just six goals and three assists in 28 Premier League games for us as we finished 12th. But it seems his dip in form, at least according to him, could have been due to his dietary habits.

A new Sterling

He didn’t explicitly say that, but Sterling mentioning that he has changed his diet to shed extra weight automatically implies he isn’t happy with his performances and wants to make changes to improve it. He said, via Football.London:

“In the season I changed a bit of my diet. I went to do something a little bit different I hadn’t done before and I had a little bit more KGs on me that I haven’t had before.

“I think I was probably carrying a bit of extra weight, I had a few hamstring problems and probably towards the end of the season the hamstring was playing up again, and that was it; and me and the manager made a decision together to try and get the hamstring right.”

The English winger didn’t have the best of time with injuries last season. He had two separate hamstring injuries that made him miss a handful of games both times. It is important that a player of his quality stays fit.

This season will be important for him. Mauricio Pochettino must decide where he wants to use Sterling — whether it is on the left wing or the right flank. Let us hope it isn’t centre-forward, because Sterling isn’t a No. 9 and the club need to make a signing in that area.

Sterling’s pace, low centre of gravity and dribbling ability is best utilised out wide. Finishing has never been his strongest suit. Fans can hope to see him in action tomorrow when we face Brighton & Hove Albion in a friendly at the Lincoln Financial Field in the USA.
