As per a tweet from Blue_Footy, via L’Equipe (h/t Football.London), Spanish side Atletico Madrid join Chelsea in the race to sign Montpellier striker Elye Wahi during this summer window.
A couple of days ago, the Athletic (subscription required) revealed that the Blues are looking to sign the player with an aim to loan him to sister club in France – RC Strasbourg.
Wahi is a young French striker who has been at Montpellier since September 2018. He has scored 32 goals in 84 Ligue 1 games for the club. He is also a French U21 international and on course to winning his first senior France cap if he keeps scoring at this rate.
Chelsea are short in the centre-forward department. Out of all the things that went wrong last season, not being able to convert chances into goals was the main issue once again.
Since the departure of Diego Costa more than five years ago, the Blues have not been able to get the best out of the number of nines who have signed for the club.
The club has signed young Senegal forward Nicolas Jackson to cover that up. But, the former Villarreal player only has one season of senior football behind him. To add to that, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has joined Olympique de Marseille.
Wahi, on the other hand, although is only 20 years of age, has played for the Montpellier first-team since the 2020/21 season. As mentioned above, his goal tally to league appearances isn’t bad considering some of the appearances came off the bench.
But, if Atletico are ready to make an offer for the Frenchman, they can offer something more than Chelsea in footballing terms – a chance to play in European football next season. The Blues aren’t in any of that and it would be tough to crack the top teams because of how young the squad is.
