As per the Guardian, Chelsea would consider offers for midfielder Conor Gallagher amidst interest from London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.
Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino wants to upgrade his midfield which could involve selling Gallagher and signing Moises Caicedo this summer.
But, doing the latter may not be that easy knowing Brighton are determined to sell Caicedo on their terms or have Levi Colwill in return. The Seagulls are happy to drag the negotiations till the end of this window.
Coming back to Gallagher, it is a bit of a surprise that Chelsea are looking to sell him regardless of what happens with the Caicedo deal. The club have already let go of four midfielders in this window so far.
Mason Mount has gone to Manchester United, Mateo Kovacic signed for Manchester City, N’Golo Kante left as a free agent to play for Al-Ittihad and Ruben Loftus-Cheek moved to AC Milan.
As of now, the midfield options Pochettino have are Enzo Fernandez, Gallagher, Cesare Casadei and Andrey Santos. The latter two are yet to make an appearance for the senior team.
Keeping that in mind, ignoring what happens with the Caicedo deal, it makes very little sense to sell Gallagher. After an explosive loan spell at Crystal Palace during the 2021/22 season, the Englishman didn’t get many opportunities last season when it comes to starting on a regular basis.
He is a decent box-to-box midfielder who has an eye for a goal or two. Moreover, the 23-year-old has experience in the Premier League and international football.
Amidst all the player sales Chelsea have made this summer, this would border on stupidity and self-sabotage. Let’s hope common sense prevails and none of this happens in the coming days.
