Report: Chelsea in talks to land next major jersey sponsor

Chelsea are in talks with Stake.com as search for shirt sponsor gathers steam

According to The Daily Mail Chelsea have held discussions with betting company Stake.com to become the next shirt sponsor for the upcoming 2023/24 campaign.

The Blues are looking for a new shirt sponsor after current sponsor Three’s deal came to an end this summer. Three also attempted to cut ties with the club following sanctions against previous Roman Abramovich.

As Stake is presently providing better financial terms than Allianz, the negotiations between the Blues and the latter have ceased. Stake also sponsors other teams, like Everton, as well as Formula 1 and the UFC.

If the deal is finalised between Chelsea and Stake, then the West Londoners could be at risk given that the Premier League have a thing against betting companies being sponsors. A total of eight clubs have been impacted by this after having tied the knot with similar companies.

Our failure to qualify for Europe let alone the UEFA Champions league does make us somewhat of a liability in terms of financial strength. To also balance the wages bill, the Blues will need to generate a sizable profit by selling players apart from further sponsorship deals.

Given how other clubs have been affected by these betting sponsors, Chelsea could very well be playing with fire. However, given our issues with FFP, it is debatable how much of a choice we have in the matter.

If the deal does go through, it could have a significant impact on us since we have to adhere to the Financial Fair Play guideline, balance the pay, and recruit new players during the summer transfer window. In the transfer market, there is still much work to be done and we have yet to sell players.

Let’s only hope Todd Boehly and the company make the right choice before officially naming Stake as the club’s shirt partner for the upcoming season.
