Mauricio Pochettino decides who to keep as Chelsea’s No. 1 next season

Mauricio Pochettino will keep Kepa Arrizabalaga as his number one keeper in first season as Chelsea boss

As per Sky Sports, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino will keep Kepa Arrizabalaga as his number one keeper in the team for the coming season.

Contrary to reports that the Blues are negotiating a deal to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, Pochettino, who arrived at the club a few days ago, wants Kepa to be his number one.

There are doubts regarding Edouard Mendy though and Chelsea may look to sell him in the transfer window. The Senegal international did reject a bid late last year, deeming it as disrespectful.

Kepa himself hasn’t covered himself in glory so far in a Chelsea shirt. After being dropped in favour of Mendy in September 2020, the Spaniard got his place back in the earlier part of the 2022/23 season.

But, the lack of command in his box is still there while the susceptibility in shot-stopping can take over on certain occasions.

It remains to be seen whether Pochettino has taken this decision because he is confident of getting the best out of Kepa, or whether Chelsea have focus on buying and selling players in other departments of the squad.

The boss will have a lot of work to do on the keeper when the pre-season starts. The command of the box and playing out from the back with confidence have to be there for starters.

For a team to do well, the most important thing is the stability of their goalkeeper. So, if Pochettino wants to improve the squad’s performance next season, he must make sure Kepa is at the level needed to make the outfield players do well.
