Arsenal enter the race for 23-year-old Chelsea star with huge price tag

Arsenal are keen on signing Real Madrid target and Chelsea forward Kai Havertz

As per the Guardian, Arsenal are strong contenders to sign Chelsea forward Kai Havertz during the summer window. Real Madrid have registered their interest but could face competition now.

Bayern Munich and Manchester City have also looked at the possibility of signing the German international. Chelsea would demand something in the region of £70m as they aim to recoup some money to spend in the transfer market.

Havertz’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer of 2025 (Transfermarkt). He has stated his desire to leave the club and Chelsea do not want to keep players whose contracts are expiring in the near future.

The 23-year-old has struggled for consistency since moving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2020. He did score the winner against City in the Champions League final in 2021 but hasn’t reciprocated the performance of that level very often.

The managers at Chelsea have used him as a false nine. Although he has the technical ability to do well in tight spaces, the ruthlessness isn’t there to score goals in big chunks.

For that reason, if the Blues manage to get the money they want from the Havertz sale, they must focus on signing an out-and-out number nine this summer.

The other question is – do Chelsea want to sell the player to Arsenal? One would think that it is not an eye-opener given Jorginho was signed by the Gunners in January and several other Blues players have moved to North London in the recent past (re. Willian, David Luiz).

The key part of this deal could be the money Chelsea will get. If the buying club offers anything close to the asking price, it would be a win for the Blues because Havertz hasn’t shown much to be priced around £70m.
