Chelsea interim manager Frank Lampard has stated that he will leave the club at the end of the season. With just two games left the Blues are currently in mid-table with no European football to look forward to next season.
The 1-0 defeat against Manchester City means Lampard has lost seven of the nine games as Blues caretaker manager, giving him one of Chelsea’s worst records in the front office. Given his similarly poor stint at Chelsea, it is amazing how he was considered for the job by Todd Boehly.
The 44-year-old has dismissed any conversations about staying beyond this season with Mauricio Pochettino set to take over as the permanent manager next season. The Argentine has a lot on his plate to address if the Blues are to return to the top.
Speaking after the game against Manchester City, (h/t Metro), Lampard was asked if he would remain at Chelsea beyond the summer. He gave a clear response and claimed that Pochettino will bring in his own men to aid his cause.
‘No. A new manager will come in and bring his own coaches, I’m sure,’
He was then questioned about what players can achieve in the future and was far more vocal. Lampard believes the players control their own destiny and how far they can go at Stamford Bridge is up to them.
‘‘It’s in their hands. I can’t say. I got asked, “How long will it take? We don’t know. ‘ It’s down to the players themselves that we have. For the club, it will be down to the direction we take it in under the new coach. This Premier League is getting tougher.”
Lampard’s appointment will undoubtedly affect his reputation as a manager because he has stuck to his conservative style, which has resulted in only one win in nine games. We were slow against City’s second squad, but we did little to give them a hard time.
To call Lampard’s second coming a failure would be an understatement. We were better off sticking with Graham Potter until the end of the campaign.
Lampard’s legacy as a player at Chelsea is intact and nobody can ever take it away from him. However, as a manager, it is a whole different story.
