Frank Lampard’s worst fears realised as injury-hit Chelsea star is ruled out for the season

Chelsea star Ben Chilwell set to miss the rest of this season with an injury

Ben Chilwell is set to miss the remainder of this season as Chelsea boss Frank Lampard confirms that his situation is similar to Reece James and Mason Mount, who are out till the summer.

Chilwell picked up a hamstring injury against Bournemouth last week. There were suggestions at the time that the England international won’t be able to take part in any of the four games remaining in this campaign.

Those fears are coming to fruition now. The former Leicester City fullback has missed a lot of games due to injuries in the last 18 months, including the whole of the second half of last season because of an ACL setback.

Here’s what Lampard said when asked about Chilwell’s injury (h/t Mirror):

“Not fit [Chilwell]. It’s a similar story to Reece James and Mason Mount. I feel for him. We miss big players. Reece, Mason and Ben are big internationals.”

Although there is nothing to play in the remaining league games, it would have been ideal if key players had stayed fit. After a hard-fought win over Bournemouth to break the losing streak, generating a winning momentum would have been important going into the break.

As discussed above, Chilwell’s luck has been rotten with injuries. We can only that he will be back for the pre-season and start next season on a positive note. Marc Cucurella and Lewis Hall would be in the reckoning to start in his position.

While Chelsea have nothing to play for, their opponents in the final four games are in the opposite situation. It starts on Saturday against Nottingham Forest, a team that is fighting for its life to stay alive in the Premier League.

They will also face Manchester City, Manchester United, and Newcastle United to have a potential say in the title and top-four race.

The Blues cannot look at that and plan. Lampard should be aiming to win the games and end this tumultuous season on a high. Whether it makes a difference in any of the races, it is up to the opposition teams to think about.
