“Don’t worry about that”- Atletico chief issues statement on on-loan Chelsea star Joao Felix’s future

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo is unsure of Chelsea star Joao Felix’s future at the club

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo claimed he is unsure of Joao Felix’s future at Chelsea despite the Blues wanting to keep the Portuguese forward at the club.

Felix who joined Chelsea on a loan spell in the winter transfer window has scored three goals in 13 Premier League matches. However, his performance has convinced West Londoners to make his signing permanent, but Chelsea are reluctant to meet Felix’s £87 million valuation.

However, they are now thinking about keeping him at Stamford Bridge for another loan period, and it appears that the Spanish club might agree to Felix’s second loan term at Chelsea.

Felix’s relationship with Diego Simeone, the head coach of Atletico Madrid, has also deteriorated, and it doesn’t seem likely that the 23-year-old will return to the Spanish team.

When asked about the future of the former Benfica forward, the president of Atletico confirmed it and said, as quoted by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano:

“We don’t know what will happen to Joao in the summer. At the moment he is at Chelsea. Then we see if he can renew or not; he can continue another season or not, but don’t worry about that.”

Felix is bursting with promise, and with a suitable manager, he can reach the peak of his ability. And given Atletico’s current form, it seems unlikely that they want the Portuguese, as they are flourishing without him in La Liga and are in second place.

Considering he joined in January, he has fared productively to be honest, although there are still few forwards who have had a full season but have had trouble making a statement, such as Antony who joined Manchester United in the previous summer window and has only four goals in 22 Premier League matches, one more than Felix.

Meanwhile, Manchester City record signing Jack Grealish, who joined in the 2021–2022 season, has just two goals more than Felix this season. So if we are to give Felix another opportunity under the new manager, Felix will likely leave his imprint next season.

There’s a saying, especially for teams outside the big six, ‘don’t fall in love with the loan player’. With each passing week, Chelsea fans are beginning to think of the Portuguese forward as their own. Not many will disapprove if he stays with us beyond the summer.
