According to rumours, Chelsea may decide to reignite their pursuit of acquiring Paris Saint-Germain attacker Neymar in the summer transfer window.
According to the Mirror, (h/t Daily Mail) PSG are aiming to sell a number of players, including Neymar, in the summer transfer window in an effort to win the Champions League.
Todd Boehly, the owner of Chelsea, attended a meeting in February to discuss Neymar’s possibility. He is now working to rekindle Chelsea’s interest in acquiring him. Neymar became a prominent figure at Santos before he joined Barcelona and formed a trio with Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi, who went on to win a treble in the 2014-15 season.
However, in a world-record, £200 million transfer, Neymar joined PSG in 2017, and his time there has helped the team’s valuation rise to £2.7 billion ($3.2 billion).
But while he has had a respectable time since joining a Ligue 1 team, he has a history of injuries and is currently out again with an ankle problem he sustained in February.
He had a fantastic season at PSG this year, scoring 18 goals and dishing out 17 assists in just 29 appearances before he was injured. That has been the story for him in Paris and injuries have stopped him from realising his full potential.
Although it would be fantastic to sign him, there are more drawbacks than perks. He will undoubtedly strengthen our team, could adapt to the Premier League, and is a fantastic goal scorer who can play anywhere in the attacking third.
Like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, Neymar has become a football icon who would grab headlines wherever he goes. Chelsea would become even more famous globally if they do sign him. However, he will not be a light name on the wage bill and neither can we expect PSG to sell him on the cheap, given how much they invested in him.
Since he would want to start in every game, our young players, like Mykhaylo Mudryk and Noni Madueke, would be affected and could see limited game time. To add to that, he is 31 and injuries have rendered him ineffective at times for PSG and Brazil. On form, hardly anyone is a better player than him.
But he could be on the decline and we are better off investing this money elsewhere.
