Chelsea have been forced to re-hire sacked medical staff member Jose Calvarro just a few months after parting ways with him in September.
As per the Evening Standard, the Blues have re-hired him after a request from the players. Calvarro, along with medical chiefs Thierry Laurent and Paco Biosca, were let go by the west London giants when Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over the club.
It was a part of a backroom clearout, perhaps to impose the American owners’ identity on the club. Calvarro has a good idea about the club’s workings, having been with Chelsea since 2016 until September last year.
Chelsea players were believed to be worried about the club’s medical department and injury issues as early as January this year. This seems like a sane move.
Our injury problems are there for all to see. We have suffered especially with the fitness issues of our defenders. Marc Cucurella, Reece James, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz and Kalidou Koulibaly are currently sidelined with injuries.
Boehly and co. sacked backroom members at will last year after buying the club. The changes were visible from top to bottom, with Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter among those who have been sacked.
Hopefully, Calvarro’s return to SW6 will do us some good. He was here when we won the Premier League with Antonio Conte and the UEFA Champions League under Tuchel.
He joined Serie B side Como after being sacked by Chelsea and the players were left unhappy by the west London giants’ decision to sack him. In all honesty, players and other staff members should have been properly consulted and their views considered when such a decision was first made. At least our owners are big enough to admit their mistake and re-hire the Spaniard.
