As per David Ornstein of The Athletic (h/t Football.London), Chelsea players Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek could be part of the group leaving the squad in the summer window.
Mount has his contract expiring in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). He is strongly linked with a move to Liverpool after rejecting new deals from Chelsea. The club has currently stopped negotiations until the end of this season. If they do not come to a positive conclusion, they will sell the 24-year-old.
Gallagher has a contract at Stamford Bridge in 2025, while Loftus-Cheek’s deal expires in 2024. The duo were linked with Newcastle United in the January window. It seems as if the Blues will sell them in the coming summer.
The one thing common with these players is that they are academy products of Chelsea. So, whatever sale value they get after letting go of them, will count as an outright profit. The club could do with the retrieval of some cash after spending like crazy in the last two transfer windows.
It is a shame though because Mount, Gallagher and Loftus-Cheek are good players with a very high ceiling of potential. Out of the three, Mount could be the biggest miss as he was Chelsea’s best player in the last two seasons. Things have not gone to plan this year, but that goes with most players in the squad.
Moreover, the England international has innate leadership skills that could have been used by the club, instead of playing hardball in contract negotiations and potentially selling him in the summer.
After a great loan spell at Crystal Palace, Gallagher has blown hot and cold this season, but we know he has the qualities to come good. Letting go of Loftus-Cheek makes sense though because he is 26 now and has struggled to live up to his promised potential.
