Injured Chelsea loanee set to return to London for rehab

Loaned-out right-back Malo Gusto to come back to Chelsea for rehabilitation

According to Football.London, Chelsea have announced that loaned-out right-back Malo Gusto will undergo his rehabilitation from injury in Cobham, London.

After completing the signature for Gusto on the deadline day of the January window, the 19-year-old was loaned back to Lyon for the remainder of this campaign.

A few days ago though, the right-back suffered a hamstring injury while playing the French Cup tie against Lille. He is now set to return to London to continue his recovery from that setback.

This is probably a good decision by Chelsea to call him back. Whatever the timeline of his recovery is, it is better that he spends that with the medical staff who is eventually going to be working with him from the summer onward.

As Chelsea fans, we can only hope that the right-back is not out of action for a long while. If he can get fit, go back to Lyon and play more games before returning for the pre-season with minutes under his belt, it would be great.

When Chelsea signed Gusto, the purpose was clear – provide backup to Reece James in the right-back position. The club sees the Frenchman as one of the best young right-backs in Europe.

The 19-year-old does possess attributes that are similar to James. He is excellent going forward and creating chances, has the pace to make defensive recoveries and is technically good for such a young player.

Amidst all the insane spending done by Chelsea in the last two transfer window, spending £26m to get Gusto can be considered a shrewd business.

Once he arrives at the club full-time in the summer, the manager Graham Potter will have the option to integrate him as a right-back, while maybe pushing James to midfield in the long run.
