Bayern Munich make contact with French goalkeeper on Chelsea’s radar

Transfer News: Bayern Munich make contact with Illan Meslier’s agent amid interest from Chelsea

According to French outlet Media Foot (h/t Yorkshire Evening Post) German giants Bayern Munich have made contact with Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier’s agent amid interest from Chelsea.

The 22-year-old has impressed during his time at Elland Road since making a move there in 2020 from FC Lorient. He has been an integral part of the Whites and has helped them survive in the Premier League.

His performances over the past few months have earned him interest from us and Manchester United, but now Bundesliga side Bayern have also seem to have taken up a keen interest in him.

Bayern are said to be looking for a long-term successor to Manuel Neuer and have as such made contact with his agent for a possible deal. However, in what will be a boost to the west London club, it is claimed that the Frenchman’s preference is the Premier League.

Edouard Mendy has struggled in between the posts this season. The Senegal international has made some silly mistakes which have cost the team dearly during the first half of the season.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was replaced by Mendy in the first team seems to have come back to his old form. The Spaniard stepped up during the absence of Mendy and pulled off some fabulous saves to cement his place back in the team.

It has seemed that Graham Potter prefers him and that is likely to be the case going forward. While we have two good keepers, Mendy is 30 and Arrizabalaga is 28. Our third-choice keeper Marcus Bettinelli is also 30 and as such the club is lacking a young keeper to be the number one for years to come.

Meslier has been fantastic for his side and has good Premier League experience under his belt. With the keeper also preferring to stay in England, it would make sense to try and seal a deal for him.

But the young keeper has been crucial for his side and it will be surprising if they allow him to leave mid-season. It remains to be seen where the 22-year-old ends up in the near future.
