Transfer News: Chelsea offer 30-year-old star to Tottenham Hotspur

Transfer News: Chelsea offer goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to rivals Tottenham Hotspur

In surprising news, Chelsea have offered goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to rivals Tottenham Hotspur. This is according to 90min (h/t Express).

Spurs are looking to bring in a new number one either in January or next summer. Antonio Conte’s side is anticipating that this will be Hugo Lloris’ last season at the club.

Mendy has fallen down the pecking order since the appointment of Graham Potter as coach, with the former Brighton & Hove Albion boss favouring Kepa Arrizabalaga to be the number-one shot-stopper.

Luck has favoured the Spaniard, who was linked with a move away from the club this summer. When Potter took charge, Mendy was out injured and the 28-year-old was called to step in. Impressive performances in the run of games helped the former Athletic Bilbao man become first choice again.

Meanwhile, Mendy has seen a drop in form this season. The Senegal international has not been the same as he was when he first joined the club in 2020. His impressive displays made him the undisputed number one at the west London club, but things have changed.

In the last match for his country in the FIFA World Cup against The Netherlands too, the 30-year-old was at fault for both the goals his side conceded towards the end of the game. Such a performance is highly unlikely to help his cause back at the club.

Chelsea, meanwhile, seem to have shortlisted some replacements for the Senegal international. Brighton’s keeper Robert Sanchez and Everton and England number one Jordan Pickford have been linked with a move to the west London club as of late.

While Potter may want a new keeper, it is not wise for the club to offer the player to a rival like Spurs. As for Mendy, the 30-year-old will hope to have a good next game against hosts Qatar this Friday. Decent performances during the tournament could help Potter have a change of heart.
