Veteran Chelsea star seeking to double his wages amidst Stamford Bridge contract negotiations

Italian midfielder Jorginho asking for double his wages to sign new contract at Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho is asking for double his wages to sign a new contract and remain at the club beyond this season, according to Diario Sport (h/t football.london).

The Italy international’s existing deal expires in the summer of 2023. And in order to renew it, the 30-year-old is asking for his £5.5 million salary to be boosted to £12 million.

Jorginho is attracting interest from several top clubs around Europe. Juventus, Barcelona and AC Milan are keeping an eye on his situation in West London.

While the Italian is happy with the Blues currently, it is likely that he will leave. Apart from the 30-year-old, N’Golo Kante’s deal is also in its final year. Thus, the club have big decisions to make regarding the France international as well.

Jorginho made his way to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2018. He followed Maurizio Sarri from Napoli to West London. And the 30-year-old was seemingly integral to the Italian manager’s style of play.

And while his time with Chelsea has been relatively fruitful, some supporters feel we could do with more quality in the engine room.

Jorginho and Kante have been important players for us over the years. With the duo in the middle of the park, the Stamford Bridge side lifted their second Champions League trophy by beating Manchester City in the final in 2021.

However, the Italian and French nationals have been underwhelming for some time now. The Euro 2020 winner has not been able to convince fans of his quality over the last couple of campaigns. On the other hand, the 2018 World Cup winner has been plagued by injuries for some time now.

Therefore, Chelsea need to reinforce in the midfield if Jorginho decides to leave. However, the club need to ensure the new signings are thoroughly vetted and fit new manager Graham Potter’s plans.
