Thomas Tuchel, who was sacked as Chelsea manager on 7 September, feels he had more to do at the Stamford Bridge side. The German is disappointed at not being able to complete his “job” with the Blues.
The former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain head coach did not have the best of starts to the 2022/23 campaign. We barely won our first game against Everton in the Premier League.
We subsequently drew against Tottenham Hotspur and lost 3-0 to Leeds United. Another loss to Southampton in between the Leicester City and West Ham United wins made life difficult for the German.
The last nail in the coffin of Tuchel’s reign in the Stamford Bridge dugout came at Maksimir Stadium in a 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the opening group stage game of the Champions League.
Tuchel’s sacking came as a surprise to some fans. The former PSG head coach had an overall successful spell in the Blues’ dugout. We won the Champions League in 2021 under the German boss. And the owners seemingly backed him in the recent transfer window.
Speaking to The Hindu (Subscription Required) [h/t football.london], Tuchel expressed sorrow at not being able to continue as Chelsea manager for longer. The German claims he was in for the long run. However, Todd Boehly had other ideas.
“Yes, I am upset. And I am sad because I think my job at Chelsea was not finished.
“I had a fantastic relationship with the players. We had a fantastic relationship with all the staff.
“So it was pretty demanding, but it was also very, very bonding. So we did this together, and I was in for the long run. I was ready to go a long way because I felt happy, but the owners had a different idea, and you have to accept it.”
While under Tuchel, we were crowned European champions, the Stamford Bridge side were unable to challenge for the Premier League title. Last season, the injuries to Reece James and Ben Chilwell hampered our form.
The arrival of Graham Potter has given some supporters new hope of a changing era under Boehly. However, it remains to be seen how the English manager fares in his time in the Stamford Bridge dugout.
