Alan Shearer hits out at Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella for comical defending

Speaking in an interview after the Chelsea-Arsenal game in the Premier League as quoted by Metro, Alan Shearer hits out at Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella for his comical defending in the game against the Gunners in the corner that led to the eventual goal.

Chelsea lost 1-0 to Arsenal after failing to defend a corner from Bukayo Saka with Gabriel Magalhaes turning the ball in after a scrappy scramble in the box. A number of Chelsea players were at fault for that goal with Marc Cucurella, in particular, attracting a lot of criticism.

The Spanish left-back who had a fairly decent game otherwise was seen hugging and blocking Granit Xhaka from entering the box and did not pay attention to Gabriel’s movement. It was a moment that Cucurella would like to forget as soon as possible.

Last night’s performance was a dismal display from Graham Potter’s side. They showed absolutely no desire to get forward and create chances. Arsenal looked the far better team on the night and ultimately deservedly got the three points.

In fact, it must be said that Chelsea were rather lucky to lose by just a solitary goal. They could have and should have conceded more goals and it would have happened if only Mikel Arteta’s team had been a little bit more clinical in front of the goal.

Speaking about Chelsea’s shambolic defensive display, Alan Shearer singled out Cucurella for a lot of criticism for that goal.

“It’s embarrassing from a Chelsea point of view. Look at Cucurella in there with Xhaka. He doesn’t move at all. He just holds Xhaka, there’s nothing at all from him!”

It remains to be seen how the Blues go about producing a response. After a good start to life under Potter, the initial fizz has died down. Losses to Brighton and Arsenal mean that Chelsea are really struggling to get going and the mid-season break could not have come sooner.

Graham Potter will now get an extended time to work with whichever players don’t go away on international duty and instil his ideas into the team. Chelsea have a lot of work to do and they will be hoping that their injured players return soon too.

Chelsea have trusted Potter with a project and the English manager is capable of proving that he is the man for the job. Let’s see how he turns this situation around.
