Report: Chelsea start formal negotiations with 23-year-old star over new contract

Chelsea start formal contract renewal negotiations with Mason Mount

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea have started formal negotiations with Mason Mount with a view to a lucrative contract extension deal to tie his future down on a long-term basis.

Mount has entered the final two years of his contract at Stamford Bridge, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2024. It was revealed last month that the Chelsea hierarchy was planning talks with him over an extension.

Discussions have now taken place and though the talks are not in an advanced stage, there is palpable optimism around the place that the 23-year-old will sign the extension in the coming weeks or months.

Mount is committed to the club and will be loyal to them by rejecting any advances from English rivals or clubs from abroad. He is in line to become one of the highest earners at Chelsea.

The England international has been one of the best players at the club in the last two to three seasons and is showing signs of becoming a legend at Stamford Bridge.

Not just his quality on and off the ball, but his versatility and being adaptable to different situations is a great plus to have. He can play on either wing, as an attacking midfielder or as one of the advanced central midfielders.

The 23-year-old, who burst onto the scene in English football after a tremendous loan spell at Derby County in 2018/19, has shown signs of leadership on the field, which could bode well for the club and the manager if they are looking at a future captain in the team.

From Chelsea’s viewpoint, this contract extension should be an easy decision. They have already rewarded another academy product Reece James with a long-term contract and a high pay scale. Doing the same with Mount is a no-brainer.
