Graham Potter explains why he used Raheem Sterling as a wing-back in Chelsea vs RB Salzburg

New Chelsea manager Graham Potter made his managerial debut for the club last night when his side hosted RB Salzburg for their second group-stage encounter in the UEFA Champions League at Stamford Bridge.

There was a lot of buzz and excitement for Potter’s first game. Fans were eager to see what changes the new coach will be bringing. Among a few surprises, one that caught the eye was Raheem Sterling being deployed as a left wing-back.

It is a position usually occupied by either Ben Chilwell or Marc Cucurella. However, Sterling was up to the task as he scored his fourth goal in all competitions for the side he joined this summer.

While the Blues had to settle for a draw ultimately, the 27-year-old impressed the onlookers. The Englishman found himself unmarked on various occasions inside the opposition’s box throughout the game.

And now Potter has explained his tactical approach. In an interview quoted in the Metro, the 47-year-old manager explained his game plan and how things played out.

It was a back three as far as I was concerned with Reece and Raheem giving us the width. We wanted to get some dangerous width, and Reece and Raheem were that. Raheem is really good at attacking a backline and scored a fantastic goal. I thought he was really good in the game.

It was an all-English linkup that led to the Blues taking the lead. Reece James played the ball to Mason Mount on the right side with the midfielder’s low cross finding Sterling unmarked in the left corner of the opposition box. The winger took his time and curled home a beautiful shot.

Potter will be disappointed that his side could not walk away with all three points. Chelsea were dominant throughout the game and this could be the prelude to better things to come. Fans will know this and they will hope for a win in the next game.

The Blues travel to face local rivals Crystal Palace for their next game on October 1. The Blues won’t be playing this weekend as their match against Liverpool has been postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Potter will have ample amount of time to implement his tactics in a better way, while fans will have to watch other teams play.
