Chelsea eye surprise move for turbulent rival defensive star

Transfer News: Chelsea are considering a surprise move for Harry Maguire

In what will come as both shocking and surprising news, Chelsea are considering a move for Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire. This is according to the Daily Mail (h/t Express), who report that the Blues could bring him in a swap deal which would see Christian Pulisic go the other way.

Thomas Tuchel has been actively looking to sign another centre-back this summer. Having bought in Kalidou Koulibaly, he is looking to add another centre-back to partner the Sengalese and Thiago Silva at the back.

Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move for Leicester City centre-back Wesley Fofana. But now it seems the Blues have identified a potential backup should they fail in their pursuit of the Frenchman.

United are interested in taking the Blues winger Pulisic on loan this summer. And now Chelsea have raised the possibility of bringing Maguire to London as part of a swap deal. The American winger has been struggling for game time under Tuchel since last season.

Pulisic wants to play more as he prepares to lead his country in the World Cup in November. But that is looking less likely to happen as Tuchel does not trust him much. Maguire, on the other hand, has had his own share of struggles ever since moving to Old Trafford in 2019.

The current United captain has come under heavy criticism from fans and pundits alike for his poor performances for the Red Devils at the back. He has struggled to gain the trust of the fans, despite being the first-choice centre-back for all the coaches he has played under.

But the same cannot be said when the Englishman plays for his country. Maybe it is the atmosphere of Old Trafford that has never suited their current captain. However, he is a backup option as the main priority remains Fofana.

With less than two weeks remaining before the deadline day, Tuchel will be wise to get his house under order. It is very likely that fans will prefer Fofana over Maguire and understandably so. It remains to be seen if any of the either end up at Stamford Bridge this summer.
