“I’m surprised”- Chelsea told this rival attacker would be an upgrade on Timo Werner

Transfer News: Jason Cundy tells Thomas Tuchel that Jarrod Bowen is an upgrade on Timo Werner

Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy, while speaking on talkSPORT (h/t Express), has told Thomas Tuchel that Jarrod Bowen is an upgrade on Timo Werner. He says Bowen is better than Werner following Bowen’s breakthrough season with West Ham United.

Bowen, who joined the Hammers in 2020 from Hull City, enjoyed a fantastic last season. The forward scored 12 times and assisted the same in 36 league appearances as the London club finished seventh on the table and will play the Conference league next season. Cundy has been left impressed by the 25-year-old’s performance.

“He’s been brilliant at West Ham. I’m surprised there’s not been a bit more interest in him actually. I think he’s better than Werner, he’s in that similar kind of mould. Yeah I would [take Bowen] actually, I would have him.”

As for Timo Werner, the German international joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in 2020 and has had a turbulent time at Stamford Bridge. The 26-year-old has been inconsistent in front of goal and could only manage to score 4 goals in 21 league appearances for the Blues last season.

Werner’s inconsistent form at Chelsea has made him subject to criticism. Chelsea broke the bank for Romelu Lukaku last season, having bought him from Inter Milan for £97.5 million. But that proved disastrous as the Belgian international had a very underwhelming season with the Blues and has been loaned back to Inter for the next season.

It is no secret that Chelsea struggled to find the back of the net last season on a consistent level. Such inconsistency cost the team some precious points. To blame Werner alone as such is not right.

The whole team, especially the attackers were inconsistent in front of the goal last season. Tuchel has bought Raheem Sterling this summer to help him solve this problem.

Bowen was terrific last season and his consistent performance earned him a call-up to the England national team. There, he impressed watchers despite England’s unsuccessful campaign in the Nations League. It can be argued that a number nine is needed, but it necessarily need not be one from outside.

Armando Broja showed huge promise last season on loan at Southampton and Tuchel could, of course, give him a chance. Chelsea need to fix their defence very urgently and only after that Tuchel should think of buying any other player.

Cundy may not be wrong, considering everyone has the right to hold an opinion of their own, but signing Bowen doesn’t make a lot of sense, especially after Sterling’s acquisition.

A winger by trade who can also play centre-forward, the Blues would be wise if they go out and get a natural target man instead- one who has a habit of playing down the middle and scoring goals.
