Transfer News: Chelsea target Robert Lewandowski to join Barcelona
According to the ever reliable journalist, Fabrizio Romano (h/t football.london), Robert Lewandowski is set to join Barcelona after interest from both Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain was reported. Romano claims that the transfer will happen within the next 24 hours.
Chelsea had followed a potential deal for the Polish striker this summer, with Thomas Tuchel admitting that the 33-year-old was one of the best strikers in the world. However, any move to bring him to London seems like won’t be happening and the player is set for Barcelona.
Tuchel has seen his first-choice striker Romelu Lukaku join Inter Milan on a loan deal, after a disappointing 2021/22 season at Stamford Bridge. A striker is needed and Lewandowski was identified as a potential target. A goal-scoring machine, the Polish international has netted 312 goals in 384 Bundesliga appearances, making him one of the best strikers in the world.
The Chelsea coach is currently left with Timo Werner as the preferred choice at number nine. Armando Broja and Michy Batshuayi have returned from their respective loans and are not so much preferred by the German tactician. It was no secret that the Blues were lacking threat in front of goal last season.
Missing good chances on a consistent level cost the club some precious points last season as they finished third in the table. A solution was needed and fast. Raheem Sterling has been bought this summer to help with that. And while he will guarantee some goals, a lack of a proper number nine will cause problems for Tuchel’s tactics.
Lewandowski would have been a phenomenal signing for the Blues. He would have helped solve the goal threat issue, but that would have been short-time. Given that he is 33 years old, he would have helped solve the problem only for a few seasons. A proper striker is needed or Tuchel will have last season’s horrors repeated.
Tuchel could give Broja a chance. The Albanian showed huge potential on loan last season. Werner, despite his inconsistency, is a very good striker on his day. Maybe a little bit of motivation from the coach would help the German reignite his Bundesliga form. But if Tuchel wants to get a new striker, now would be the time for it as later on it be too late.

It is no doubt that Chelsea will regret missing out on Lewandowski. But the important thing is to see what Chelsea does about it. It will be interesting to see if the Blues eventually will bring in another striker this summer.
