According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Premier League giants Chelsea are showing interest in Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry this summer.
The Blues were heavily linked with Leeds United star Raphinha. They also had a bid accepted by the Yorkshire side only for the player to hold out for a move to Barcelona. This has prompted Thomas Tuchel and co to shift their attention elsewhere.
Chelsea are close to announcing Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling but appear keen to bring in one more winger. This is understandable given Christian Pulisic’s injuries and Hakim Ziyech’s inconsistency. The latter is currently in talks with AC Milan and could exit Stamford Bridge in the coming weeks.
Gnabry is one of the most dynamic wingers in the German top flight and has emerged as a regular for both Bayern and Germany in recent years. He has one year left on his deal at the Allianz Arena and Chelsea could tempt the Germans into selling him this summer.
Having already signed Sadio Mane from Liverpool, Die Roten already have one wide-man in, meaning that they could be amenable to selling the 26-year-old. A right-winger who can play anywhere along the frontline, Gnabry will certainly add another dimension to the Blues’ roster.
The former Arsenal man has also attracted attention from Liverpool but interest from Anfield has gone cold of late. This could present Chelsea with an opportunity to steal a march for the 26-year-old.
Gnabry might be available for £34 million, a fair price given his potential. At 26, the German still has many years left in him and is just entering his prime. If his performances the last few seasons are anything to go by, Chelsea could be landing a real game-changer.
A prolific goalscorer, he is exactly what Tuchel lacks at the moment. Given that they have been unable to bring in a direct replacement for Romelu Lukaku so far, adding more ammo on the flanks might not be the worst idea.
Chelsea already have two excellent full-backs in Ben Chilwell and Reece James on their roster. Landing Sterling and Gnabry will hand them two reliable wide-men, both of who will help overload the flanks. As long as the Bleus pull it off, they will be a force to be reckoned with on the wings next season.
